- Bellenden, John
- (1533-?1587)Bellenden (several different spellings) was a Scottish writer and poet, educated at St. Andrews University, who took his medical degree at the Sorbonne, Paris. His 1536 translation from Latin into the Scottish vernacular of Hector Boece's The History and Chronicle of Scotland had a profound influence on Scottish national feeling. Among other stories, it relates Macbeth's meeting with the witches. Bellenden also translated the first five books of Livy's Roman History. His opposition to the Reformation put him out of favor with King James V (1512-1542) and he went into exile. He wrote poems to preface his translations, and one other, "A Starscape," is set among the various stars in the night sky.Sources: An Anthology of Catholic Poets. Joyce Kilmer, ed.
